I think it's been getting worse in recent years. People do comment on articles based purely on the headline, and this behavior has been successfully trolled by people putting in fake headlines when the article is something utterly different.

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that the average computer-using first-worlder is exposed to the equivalent of 174 newspapers in a single day. Also, every 2 days, we create as much information as was created between the dawn of civilization and 2003. We're drowning in so much knowledge that a lot of people just can't handle it anymore. Our brains never evolved to handle this.
