How to Remove 'More Like This'

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 25, 2013, 5:41 AM

So last week I wrote a journal on the intrusive eyesore that is the "More Like This" feature. Tons of people complained to HQ that we preferred it as a button, and why.

Our Suggestions:

- Revert it back to a button.  It's still  button for a few Deviants, how hard is it to take it back to that?
- Make it collapsible or Drop Down menu.
- Move it further down the page, past the artists information and "More from this artist".
-  Make it smaller than the the thumbnails of the artists own work.
- Make it customizable so we can choose what we feature beside our own artwork. As of now, it's advertising our old crap AND Scraps. (as well as other people's art we don't want there) I had to store my Scraps so they wouldn't show up in it :stare:
- show LESS thumbnails.
- The distribution of exposure is terribly unfair. many people are forced to advertise others, while some deviants only advertise their own work.

It's a good feature, and good idea, no one is suggesting we scrap it. but as it is now, it's rather distracting and poorly placed. That's it. We aren't poo-pooing all the work that went into making it.

However, in the true spirit of Deviantart, they completely ignore the overwhelmingly negative feedback, as well as some very reasonable concerns and suggestions . You can make your opinion known here : fav.me/d5sh5g3

I see what you did there Deviantart :stare:.

I found this posted in a thread; a way to disable More Like This on our own:
How to Remove More Like This by parallellogic
This takes it off of your own view- it doesn't disable your artwork from being put into the mix of the system ( or your scraps and old crap. If you don't want your Scraps showing, you have to put them in Storage).

**** if you use it, it's polite to comment or :+fav: the deviation.

The problem for me is it always shows random crap that has nothing to do with what I do. I'm starting to think that it just does it by tags.

 It's no problem.

More Like This was introduced 10 months ago. This is the HQ journal explaining it: fav.me/d5rmuqf

However, it was hated- and people fought and fought to have it altered. What you see now is the end result compromise.

Well this journal is from February and there's been steady complaints from thousands of users- now they're Beta testing one of the suggestions :3

( not that its because of me, but they're making the "More From This Artist" a larger panel to the right of deviations that takes precedence over More Like This )

I've read DA works on:
"- Move it further down the page, past the artists information and "More from this artist".
-  Make it smaller than the the thumbnails of the artists own work."
while it needs to be customisable too and I see they are silent about this issue.

But, if they put it all the way down, doesn't that negate it's purpose? It makes it less visible, and it would be irritating to have to scroll past everything to find it.

Ha! I just posted on the thread (I'd been gone for some time). It's great to see others that see this 'More like This' idea the same way. Why on earth do I want to advertise others on my gallery? When you go into a shop, they don't shove their competition down your throat!

Not only that, but it's distracting in general. Even if the person going to my gallery loves my work and isn't distracted generally, the wildly flashing gif images some idiots use as their previews make me ill!

I have a question...
Is there any way to set up what kind of pictures will show up in "More like this" when you upload your own pictures?
I uploaded a picture, but some perverted pictures without any connection to my artwork started showing up, so I deleted it -_-"
I'm not going to upload it until I find a solution to somehow set "More like this" so it would not show something I don't want.
Could someone help, please? :<

No, unfortunately there's no way you can control what is displayed in the box :[.

the only thing I'd suggest is to go ahead and upload your pictures, and if perverted pictures show up in the box, keep your art up and contact the help desk (maybe take a screenshot). Tell them your issue.

So glad that I am not the only person bothered by how the More Like This feature is working. I have no problem with it giving suggestions for other things viewers might like. What I have a problem with is WHAT it is recommending. When listing suggestions of other work, the More Like This feature goes by what I have most predominately in my gallery. This right here I think is a poor decision on DA's part as it doesn't work for when an artist switches to a new focus of work. For example, the majority of my work is cutesy, girly drawings inspired by a doll franchise I found cute and became interested in, but what I have been working on recently is in literature and deals with more mature themes and is in a science fiction setting. Imagine what sort of impression viewers of my writing get of me when the More Like This feature shows nothing but suggestions for cute doll-based doodles that have nothing to do with my story in any form! It makes me worry that people will look at that glaringly large feature on the side and view all my work that way and decided that my writing isn't worth reading because it is being connected to unrelated less impressive work of mine. It frustrates me that they don't do this based on the tags in the work.

The MLT section in my drawings show nothing but Shadow Hearts and Shin Megami Tensei fanart. I used to draw a lot of SH/SMT stuff, but this was like almost two years ago! And my style and variety improved so much, but my MLT is still obssessed with SMT and SH XDDDD yeah this sucks

I'm facing an interesting problem with my page. All the "Browse like this" deviants only to one topic not even relevant to nearly all my deviantions. How Do fix this? All my "Browse like this" shows Anti-Brony pics, I only have one Anti-brony deviantion in my gallery.

this is a fairly old journal of mine and Deviantart has done nothing to address the concern about the MLT box ( except make it more obnoxious and larger).

You may have to contact the helpdesk. :[

What I really hate about this stupid feature, is if you draw things with relevance to anything that could be considered someone's fandom, suddenly your page has some extremely weird things in the related. Mostly, things you don't even want to associate yourself with, such as chibi yaoi fanart. It's rather disturbing and quite the eyesore. I wish there was a way to just opt out of that feature

All we can really do is state our opinions on it whenever we get the opportunity on Site Updates. I find a lot of people cant stand teh feature, yet dont take a few minutes to express it when they can.

I think the more feedback DA gets, the more they cant ignore it

I didn't like it much at first, because I kept pressing it instead of the artist's gallery thing, but its been getting on my nerves recently, in that it advertises artwork that has nothing to do with the image itself, or my gallery as a whole.
I had ONE stinking picture done as a request for somebody that was mildly fetishy, and now everything else advertises similar artwork that, honestly, makes it kind of embarrassing for me, even though I've now removed the original image now. It makes me feel uncomfortable that people see random images like that when looking at my work.

I'd just like it to be a toggle. The feature would still be there, but I wouldn't have to look at it.

I don't browse art much :/.

Or I think it should be smaller and below "More from this artist". I've accidentally clicked it numerous times thinking it was the artists gallery of the deviation I was looking at. Then I end up somewhere else and don't bother commenting/watching anyone :o

if it was lower on the page then it would be useless, it would require me to scroll in order to see it and i don't scroll much, i like it the way it is, it's just click after click, it's so easy and seamless :)
and again, if the thumbnails would be smaller than i wouldn't see what's on there therefore not click, again it would make this feature useless
yea, i know there are people who don't like it so this feature could be collapse-able maybe

Yeah, collapsible would be awesome.
I don't think it would useless lower on the page, by that logic, the "More From This Artist" - which has both microscopic thumbnails now, and is lower, is completely useless.
Which is kind of sad, because that means on an artists own deviation, viewers have a much higher chance of being more interested in other peoples art in MLT than in the artist they're looking at.
I don't think premium members should have to pay to redirect traffic away from them

It should be a toggle ( on and off-) drop-down, or collapsible.

'more from this artist' is useless in my opinion, i have never used it :\ the thumbnails are too small and it over all looks unattractive, i don't think i have ever clicked on a thumbnail from there
this feature of more like this gives more options to people browsing art, it's a completely new way of finding new art and a great one in my opinion, if the viewer likes the deviation they're seeing they can open a new tab to view that artist's gallery, i do that, or open the 'more like this' deviation in a new tab so i can stay on the old one too, or open multiple MLT deviations in multiple tabs so i wouldn't loose them because they keep changing from one deviation to another.
the artist doesn't loose exposure, if a viewer likes the art, MLT will not stop them from visiting their gallery or devwatching believe me, but not having the MLT feature will only give less options or art and remain the same boring way of finding art which isn't that great

you think it's redirecting traffic but it's not really, what's the difference from someone looking at an artwork not liking it and closing it and someone just moving on to another artwork? nothing changes, and if someone likes something they will open in a new tab a deviation if it catches their eye. No one will browse away from something they like, and if someone doesn't like something they will browse away with or without this feature

Well, that's you.

As I've said, I actually used the "More From This Artist". All the time. If I liked the piece I was looking at, I'd click it to take me to their gallery.
Not everyone browses DA in the same way.
And I have liked a piece I was looking at, and absent-mindedly clicked the MLT box thinking it would be the artists gallery and it wasn't. I mean, that's my personal experience.
I really don't understand what would be so horrible about making it collapsible or a drop down. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

well you clicked there because you saw something that catches your eye, it doesn't matter what artist it came from, it matters to find good art :)

and it's that it's a horrible thing to make it collapse or anything but if you haven't noticed, dA never makes things to please everyone. like when they implemented the new dA front page system they could have easily made a 'fair exposure' front page and leave the old front page so people can opt which front page they want to see (we already have a year, a week, 3 days, all time etc, one more wouldn't have been a problem) but they didn't, they want everyone on dA to have the same experience while browsing so i'm pretty sure they won't change much to the 'more like this' besides improve it to show more relevant deviations

"well you clicked there because you saw something that catches your eye, it doesn't matter what artist it came from

^ That's far from what I said. And wrong :o. I looked at a deviation and liked it, clicked the box of thumbnails not because it caught my eye. Because I wanted to go to the gallery of the artist whose painting I was looking at. It took me to a page I didn't want to go to. The end.

but I totally agree DA probably won't change it. I also never look at the front page anymore since they changed it.
