Kuroshitsuji: Grell Sutcliff by K-Koji Kuroshitsuji: Grell Sutcliff by K-Koji
An interpretation of Grell Sutcliff from the manga Kuroshitsuji. People who are familiar with the series know he's an androgynous shinigami~. I wanted to call this painting Grell's Glamour Shot for some reason lol. You actually can see his teeth- but I'll release a close up some point.

Ahh this si so amazing X3 I used to have a crush on Grell but lately not so much, possibly my gay kicking in, knowing now that she's a transwoman I can't really think of her as the androgynous guy I used to, which is my type.

ah I wish I'm too caught up in groups of people and friends that are very very invested in the idea of eliminating transphobia around Grell and all that because of... idk reasons? Either way, it's a lovely painting, you're very talented.

One of my best friends irl is trans. I attended the Trans-march in my area just this past Friday. I am not transphobic for thinking he is okama (not saying you accused me of such, just for the record, but I have seen people online do really crazy things like that for nothing). Grell is a fictional character who acts just like every other over-the-top okama/drag queen stereotype presented in japanese pop culture. It is a stereotype that has infected media for as long as I can remember. Tho sometimes, stereotypes have some base in reality. I have been in many clubs in Tokyo's gay district ( Shinjuku-ni-chome area), and I have sat at tables with drag queens in and out of drag where they will refer to themselves as girls, and "sister", and go on funny and cute tangents of winning beauty pageants and etc etc etc.
I highly doubt Toboso will ever address this in a concrete way, because Japanese simply do not address gender-politics in the same manner no matter how hard western fans might want to have questions answered. Also, its simply bad business to alienate anyone, so the smart thing is to let it remain a grey area. I think Grell will always just be a loveable, wacky, gender-fluid character, and if people enjoy him as a he, or a she, to over-think it in anyway or try to strong-arm others into one interpretation does nothing but make people shy away from being involved in the fandom.

I hope this comment has come across in the right way. ^^; .

Ah no, it did. But you're preaching to the choir with me, I know all of those things (I mean obviously not about your personal experiences but Drag queens all over use feminine pronouns and things for everything, some gay men even do it without ever doing drag. Not me, but I've seen it plenty) I've always seen him as a flamboyant, over the top gender weird guy. His expression challenges the time period he's in, which is fine, but I'd be totally kicked in the balls if I ever said that to any of my friends. I prefer grey area and the gay sides of things, maybe that's why i prefer Grell as a he? when he becomes a she it's less something I can relate to. A lot of people /say/ that it was mentioned in the confessional but no one actually gives me a direct quote.... Either way, we hold the same view in this, so while your comment came across fine and had great points, all I can really do is not and agree because I already agreed before.

 I see Grell as okama.

Where does the creator official state that Grell is definitely a trans-woman?  Grell refers to himself using female pronouns ((which lead me to believe over the top okama. Ive seen it a lot before). But everyone else does not. Everyone as "proof" links to Grell's confessional. Thats not proof though. Far from it.
I'm not speaking as a weeaboo either. I lived in Japan for a very long time ( though I moved here 3 years ago to Canada). I'm very aware of the LGBT community is Japan and the various groups.

Trans people are also quite common to see on TV. They are called Nuhafu ( New Half). If Grell was Nuhafu, and since Japanese society and entertainment has long accepted and included trans in games, books, and entertainment, I can't see why the author would suddenly shift all culture and write Grell according to the western labels and idealogy.

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't realize a mini debate was under my comments lol.

Actually the creator did say something of the effect but I can't find where I saw it now, either way it's hard to tell since the japanese tend to mix the gay community and the trans community together as if they're one thing. However Grell uses female pronouns for herself, so female pronouns are probably the best (though she said something like being in the middle once? it's not a clear cut topic at all)

Grell's a fictional character. So I like to just enjoy him in the way I understand him. . I do not think he is a transwoman. But yanno, him being fictional means everyone can feel free to see him differently

Very true! Though I recently found that the creator did say she was a pre op transwoman and simply isn't horribly out about it because of the time period (This was in Grell's Confessional) so there is that. I prefered Grell as a flamboyant gay guy tbh, I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the idea that he's not, but at the same time it's hard to dispute when the creator said so in a book! so!

eue
Grell is a guy.
He acts girlish and flirts on boys (Like admin)
He might be gay.
Either way, it isn't confirmed, sort of like Crona's sexuality. (I think he's a dude in the anime)

I quote "Yana Toboso, said so many times in the manga and in interviews, that Grell is female. Please change the gender to female. She is NOT male. As well that Grell calls herself by female pronouns and correct people from calling her a "he" to a she."

actually it's never confirmed properly, a lot of people outside the Japanese culture forget that culturally it's very very different in Japan to be trans, and they tend to lump the gay and trans communities together. In Grell's confessional, what they're talking about, Grell uses female pronouns but does it in a similar way to how drag queens do it. All in all, he could be trans or he could not, it's up to how you interpret it.
